editorial cartoon prewriting checklist #1

Topic: The key issue that the comic or cartoon is addressing is that college is too expensive.
Story: The college student is sitting in his dorm checking his facebook while the parents are at home facing their checkbook. The main idea is that the parents have to deal with the costs while the student is basically doing what he wants in school.
Audience:  The country that the cartoon was produced is the USA. The historical moment is the crash of the economy. It appeared online at first. It speaks to the audience because parents that are going through the same thing can relate. The cartoon is trying to say that college should not be as expensive as it is.
Author: The artist enjoys creating cartoons that deal with economical issues.
Argument: The cartoon's message about the costs of college is that it should not be so stressful to send your kids to college for a better education.
Composition: This cartoon involves two frames. It shows the consequences of sending your children to college & the stress involved.
Word & image: Both are used in this cartoon. The words are more essential because it would be harder to understand without them.
Imagery: These drawings are very realistic because parents actually do have to deal with the stress of money sending their kids to college while the student has fun in the meantime.
Tone: The cartoon is mostly comical. This creates a powerful rhetorical impact on readers because as true as it is, there can still be humor involved.
Character & setting: A scene is featured by the cartoon. The student is happy being away from home while the parents are more upset only because of the cost. The student is a male & he has parents in the next frame. They do not represent anyone specifically.
Cultural resonance: No this cartoon does not refer to any actual people or events. It is just a generalization of the way society is.
